This assignment requires you to create a short video to explain a concept from class in non-academic language, yet supported with research sources. You’ll choose a topic and deadline from a list available in class, and working alone or with a partner, create an XtraNormal video in which two characters discuss your topic. All videos will be presented in class the week of March 12.
XtraNormal allows you to create animation videos by typing dialogue, so you’ll need to work carefully to write a script that is both conversational and informative. Export your video to YouTube and post it to the class blog when it is completed. Be sure to post your references (minimum of three*), in APA citation style. These sources must also be cited within the video. Your video must be at least three minutes long, and no longer than five and a half minutes. To get started, visit xtranormal.com/students, and use the token 2D940.
*Your three references may include one required course text, and at least one of the three must be a scholarly book or journal article. The video citations need not be full APA reference format (in other words, characters do not have to say, “Author’s name(s). (Year). Title of article. Title of periodical, volume. Page numbers.” but the work must be mentioned in their conversation), but you must provide either a printed bibliography (email is fine) or include a screen shot of your bibliography in the final frame.
Here some possible subjects for video dialogues:
| kyriarchy | gender similarities hypothesis |
| speech community | mansplain |
| standpoint theory | themes of masculinity |
| single-sex education | themes of femininity |
| glass ceiling and glass walls | pink-collar work |
| agenda-setting | complementary copy |
| stereotypes in the workplace | stereotypes in media |
| linguistic relativity | gender bias in language |
| micropolitics and macropolitics (nonverbal behavior) | objectification theory |
| mentor | encoding/decoding theory in media |
| gender as performance | hidden curricula |
| social construction vs. essentialism | media saturation |
Please feel free to suggest other concepts from class to explore in this assignment — just check with me first so that we may avoid duplicative topics for this assignment.

Here’s the goofy little video I made, just to test how easy and fun it is to make a movie. I made Queen Elizabeth and a Revolutionary War soldier say the lines of Jake and Elwood from The Blues Brothers, when Elwood shows up to pick up Jake from prison! It took me about 25 minutes, but I didn’t edit the camera angles — just left the automatic camera on. I’m sure your videos will be much better developed. This is basically just dialogue, with no action and minimal other effects — you should strive to outdo my crappy sample movie.
